Religion in der Schule

The statutory obligation to attend school in Germany provides the state with a unique but disputed opportunity to shape the individual's personality. School is supposed to be both a place of education as well as integration of the adolescent generation into society. But in an increasingly heterogeneous society set on the pillars of civil rights and liberties with diverging beliefs, educational and moral concepts, conflicts between state educators, pupils and their parents are unavoidable. The present volume is dedicated to the relationship between individual rights to freedom of religion, belief and thought as well as freedom of conscience on the one hand and the state interest in education and integration through school on the other. The questions discussed here arise not only in the context of schooling, but also with regard to society as a whole.
