Religiosität und intellektuelle Redlichkeit

Grappling with the tension between our religious orientations and modernity's drive to lend authority to things based on arguments against the backdrop of scientific and historial knowledge has made intellectual honesty a guiding principle in the modern era. The ascent of the concept of religiousness in the 19th and 20th centuries was a reflection of this state of mind. Thus the intellectual climate in the modern era was defined less by religious tone-deafness (Max Weber) as it was by an awareness of the crisis caused by scientism and historicism. However, modernity has always seen this crisis as a chance for the religious to make itself more concise. This volume seeks to shed light on the contribution that the quest for intellectual honesty has made to the creation of religious identity in the modern era, a contribution which has by no means been exhausted.
