Summary
The frequent demand for a streamlined yet effective state sounds paradoxical. This is however at the heart of a debate which has been going on for years among many associations and in the fields of economics, law and political science. In this volume, the authors describe a possible solution to this dilemma: responsive regulation. The state does no longer act in a strictly imperative manner, but rather according to the interests of those affected by the laws and the combination of incentives which determine their behaviour. This allows the state to interfere as little as possible, but as much as it is necessary with the interests of citizens and enterprises.
