Religion is a complex matter. Anyone studying it analytically faces the challenge of delivering a normative judgment and at the same time defining his or her own position. Jörg Dierken develops a concept of religion from a Protestant perspective in interdisciplinary discussions and in an analysis of other religious positions. In doing so, he focuses on the self-consciousness of individual freedom. The author presents these basic ideas in various contexts: in categorial reflections on the concept and the function of religion in modern times, in the determination of a position in the philosophy of religion in a discourse with classical philosophers as well as in ethical analyses of Protestant social forms and cultural views.
