Summary
This volume deals with figurations of otium (translated as idleness or leisure in English) in various languages and in different cultural and historical contexts. The essays outline the word field of otium - repose, relaxation, idleness, leisure, recreation, diversion, entertainment - in classical Greek and Latin, in German (which has the specific untranslatable lexeme Muße), English, French, Spanish, Czech, Bangla and Urdu. These semantic analyses are complemented by discussions of the social and cultural or historical embedding of discourse about leisure and its opposite, laziness, and by an extensive examination of the utilization and manipulation of these discourses for various political, ideological and social or moral purposes. Contributors from disciplines focused on language, linguistics, classical studies, theology, and psychology ensure a broad interdisciplinary approach to the subject.
