Summary
Freedom and security are two objectives of modern states that have to be brought into harmony. The history of (legal) philosophy has occupied itself with this question for 2000 years but approached it differently. Never before has individual freedom played such an important role as it does today and neither has distrust in state-generated security been so pronounced. Inspecting the important developmental stages of ideas on liberty and security from ancient to modern times allows the recognition of implications that are bound to one position. Knowledge of various models makes it possible to consider the contemporary freedom and security discussion with more distance and sober-mindedness.
