Summary
The EU single market sometimes seems to overwhelm Member State cultural identity. Some restrictions - such as those on gambling - serve social and cultural goals which are crucial for social cohesion and the texture of public life. Yet, Member States have tended to focus on market imperfections - a defense that leaves the real issues unsaid. This volume argues that gambling law is the perfect habitat for determining the limits of the market by recognizing gambling regulation as a form of collective self-definition protected by Union law.
