The renowned Old Testament scholar Jörg Jeremias has long been occupied with fundamental questions of the theology of the Old Testament. This volume contains 23 of his paradigmatic contributions to the subject. It starts with basic considerations on the recent history of research and on questions of »prolegomena« for an Old Testament theology. The other texts are case studies, dealing with important aspects of creation theology and ethics, and with (hermeneutical) problems of the concepts of God in the Old Testament such as divine wrath, repentance, and vengeance. Another group of studies focusses on the dialectics of praise and remoteness of YHWH in the Psalms. The volume concludes with some in-depth works on the theological development of prophetical scriptures. Here, Jeremias shows how an increasingly self-conscious theology arose in the Old Testament.
