Autonomy in collective bargaining has been under pressure for several years. It is the system of blanket collective labor agreements above all which is seen as inflexible and which many economists believe is partially responsible for the high rate of unemployment. Against this backdrop, Gabriele Britz and Uwe Volkmann examine the basis for autonomy in collection bargaining as it is found in constitutional and European law as well as the prospects for changing the current collective bargaining system.
