Christoph vom Brocke deals with the visit of the Apostle Paul to Thessalonica during his second missionary journey and with the history of the city itself, which was founded by the Macedonian king, Cassander. He begins by focusing on the results of recent archeological research on ancient Thessalonica, its monuments, its society and its economy and in particular on the Pauline era, the first century after Christ. He continues by expanding upon certain aspects of local history on the basis of material from antiquity and relating them to selected passages from 1 Thessalonians and the Thessalonica pericope of the Acts of the Apostles.
