This Talmud tract deals with the rabbinic rules of purity for menstruating women as well as with issues regarding halakhic family, marriage and sexual laws. In addition, it also addresses problems in the area of the history of medicine, above all ancient embryology and the theory of congenital malformations (teratology). This is why great importance was attached to a detailed commentary which takes into account the modern secondary literature but also the traditional Jewish commentaries. In the afterword the translator shows how these texts are used in new contexts, above all in the current discussion on bioethics.
