The 'Orla tractate is the penultimate order of the one which deals with agricultural problems. It describes the commandment, stipulated in Leviticus 19:23-25, that no one is allowed to eat the fruit of a tree less than three years old in Israel. This fruit is compared to a foreskin ('Orla) and is regarded as »not circumcised.« In the fourth year, the fruit is to be eaten in Jerusalem, and it is not until the fifth year that the fruit can be eaten everywhere. All the problems involved with this are discussed. The tractate, for which there is no Gemara in the Babylonian Talmud, provides abundant material on agriculture in Israel in antiquity. This is the first time it has been published in a German translation. A detailed commentary, which makes use of the traditional as well as the modern commentaries, and an index facilitate the understanding and the use of the text.
