Constitutional identity has become a prominent concept in German constitutional law and is something that since its famous Lisbon Judgement in 2009, the country's constitutional court has further developed. Monika Polzin traces its historical background and examines its validity from a legal and theoretical perspective in order to answer the the main question of her study, , namelywhether constitutional identity is actually a normative concept of Germany's constitution.
