Vermittlung im Streit

Using the catchphrase 'mediation', theologians in the first half of the 19th century from the Schleiermacher and Hegel schools developed concepts in order to enable a constructive combination of religious and modern scholarly thought, faith and knowledge. In doing so, their purpose was to transcend the contemporary positions of supranaturalism and rationalism and to preclude a wrong alternative of religious faith and modern education. These subjects were dealt with at the same time in academic journals. Based on the debate surrounding the denominational commitment during the disputes in Halle in 1830, Friedemann Voigt studies the discussions on religion, theology and dogmatics which were held in the two journals Theologische Studien und Kritiken and Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Kritik.
