  Summary
The principle of the »defensive democracy« is a controversial element in the German constitution. In connection with the discussions on security after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the controversy surrounding the proceedings to ban the National Socialist party in Germany, the general public has once again become aware of the concept of a defensive democracy, and it has become a subject of scholarly interest. The articles in this volume deal with different aspects of the defensive democracy and explore its varied legal and political perspectives.
