This is the first time that central essays by Viktor J. Vanberg have been collected and published in the German language. These show that Vanberg is one of the main advocates of the modern economic order and one of the most important precursors of constitutional economics. Through his careful analysis and his wise syntheses, he is able to combine James Buchanan's social contract theory and Friedrich A. von Hayek's evolutionary liberalism consistently and to develop these further. In doing so, he provides the market order and the democratic constitutional state with a discerning normative foundation, for both of them on the basis of a privilege-free competition for the benefit of sovereign citizens.
