As the originator of the term »Germanisation of Christianity«, the Protestant theologian and writer Arthur Bonus (1864-1941) is often counted as having been a pioneering German theologian between the time of the Empire and the Weimar Republic. Christopher König's study is the first to draw together the widely-scattered work of Bonus and place it in the context of the controversies surrounding the reform of the church, society, nation, and worldview that took place in the intellectual environment of cultural Protestantism around 1900. With the demand for a »German faith« that was as polarising as it was suggestive, Bonus rebelled against the foundations of protestant theology and the church, declaring war on historicism and liberal thought.
