The volume investigates how human existence is shaped by the tensions between activity and passivity, autonomy and dependence, immanence and transcendence. Volume 12 of the HKW contains Kelsen's opus magnum 'Allgemeine Staatslehre' from his Viennese years. The first comprehensive presentation of his Reine Rechtslehre, it was to mark the beginning of the heated phase of the Weimar Richtungs- und Methodenstreit.

Obvious cases of self-deception pose a considerable challenge, including from a philosophical point of view. Investigating the current debate, Simone Neuber sets out to trace the first theoretical analyses of the phenomenon of »self-deception« and sheds light on the difficulties associated with how it is conceived, even when this is applied to supposedly relevant texts from the history of philosophy.
