In the Book of Ezekiel, the term »midst/middle« appears with the highest frequency in any book of the Hebrew Bible. In line with Ancient Near Eastern ideas of cosmic order, the concept of »center - periphery« serves to illustrate the prophet's message of doom and restoration for 6th century Israel.

August Friedrich Wilhelm Sack's (1703-1786) major work »Defended Faith of the Christians« was a widely received popular-theological apology that helped this genre break through in the German-speaking world. In it, Sack calls for setting aside theological disputes and overcoming inner-Protestant bi-confessionalism.

In the second century, Clement of Alexandria places the learners at the center of Christian-ethical instruction in his Paidagogos. Johanna A. Jürgens reconstructs their profile and, from there, explores the pedagogical implications of their central position for Clement's educational concept.

Johann Gottlieb Töllner's (1724-1774) »Katechetischer Text« presents his Neological convictions for a non-academic audience. In four books, he covers the classical theological fields without adhering to the rigid structure of traditional catechisms.
