Summary

The cultures of the ancient Near East have left behind a uniquely rich corpus of multilingual
inscriptions, many of which also show the use of multiple scripts. This paper
investigates the format of those inscriptions and explains their existence in the political
context of 1st mill. bce with its various empires.
