Bildung und Konfession

The separation of western churches, sparked off by the Reformation, made it necessary to educate an elite which had a clearly defined denomination. Using the education of theologians of all denominations as an example, the authors explain the structures, forms and content of specific denominational education in the 16th century. The articles are based on varying sources and test the exemplary quantifying and qualifying methods of historical scholarship. Due to the interdisciplinary profile of the contributors, various scholarly disciplines are discussed, and perspectives for future common research are developed. The articles written focus on the analysis of individual hypotheses of confessionalization research as well as on a intensive exploration of the educational history of the age of confessionalization in regard to people, institutions and content of the knowledge imparted. The volume documents the level of research and develops perspectives for future scholarly work on the subject of forming an elite in the early modern age.
