Geschichte intellektuell

The theory of history and historiography from an intellectual point of view means pin pointing its relevance for today and understanding resulting political action. The historians, sociologists and cultural scientists contributing to this volume rethink the interaction and tension that exists here by taking a fresh look at fundamental issues from their standpoint as contemporary scholars. The work of historical thinkers and intellectuals such as Jacob Burkhardt, Max Weber, Eric Hobsbawm and Stefan Czarnowski is examined in further contributions, while the adoption of an interdisciplinary stance enables the authors to inspect concepts and their transfer from neighbouring fields and into other cultures. In the collection's final section, Europe as the stage of history, and also as a problem of historiography, is scrutinized. Each essay pays reference to Gangolf Hübinger and his understanding of historiography as an intellectual profession.
