Kriegsrecht im frühneuzeitlichen Protestantismus

The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were particularly important for the history of international law. The discovery of the Americas and the religious conflicts in Europe meant that questions of international law were controversially debated. While Roman Catholic participation in the discourse has already been subjected to a great deal of investigation, the Protestant contribution to the origin and differentiation of early modern international law is largely unknown. Michael Becker therefore turns his attention to the works of Protestant theologians, jurists, and other scholars who commented on international law issues. By referring to specific problems posed in the law of war and alliances (offensive and defensive religious wars, inter-confessional alliances) he shows that Protestant scholars also influenced the international law discourse.
