The essays in this collection do not explore linear intellectual traditions such as Augustinianism or Aristotelianism (which nevertheless are taken into account) but study definite conflicts of interest in practical politics where expert advice was requested or scholars presented their texts to the public as scholarly findings without being asked. These texts, intended for the outside world and not for the universities, contributed to the development of the modern »political public« to come.
