In deutschsprachigen Ländern wurde die Rolle des Diakonats stark vom Bild der Diakonie aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, als Dienst an den Armen, beeinflusst. Für diesen Band, der sich auf die ersten beiden Jahrhunderte des Christentums konzentriert, haben Wissenschaftler mit verschiedenen Hintergründen die Verwendung von diakonos und verwandten Wörtern im Neuen Testament und außer-biblischen Quellen, sowohl christlichen als auch anderen, hinterfragt.
