The legal framework of economic sanctions encompasses several legal areas and systems. Legal norms posing economic sanctions on subjects of international law and other persons and entities originate in the international sphere. They are mostly based on public international law or European Union law. At present, the UN Security Council is the most prominent international organ to impose economic sanctions by activating its powers pursuant to Articles 39 and 41 of the UN Charter. The sanctions regime with respect to the DPRK, based on S / RES / 2371 (2017) of 5 August 2017, is one of the most prominent recent examples. Likewise, the European Union is entitled to impose international economic sanctions pursuant to Article 215 TFEU combined with Article 29 TEU. With respect to the DPRK, Council Regulation (EU) 2017 / 1509 of 30 August 2017 is the most recent pertinent legal act.
