This article examines the spatial scope of the 'political' in private law, as well as the role
of private international law. When seeking to use private law for political purposes, to
what extent can (and should) a legislator extend certain private law rules to cross-border
situations? The focus is primarily on the extension of private law within the multi-level
system of the European Union and on the future of the Savigny model.795
