The various branches of the West Semitic Alphabet script, and their scribal dialects,
applied two systems for the notation of numerals: One system was an autochthonous
creation and common to Phoenician and Aramaic. Another system, adopted
from Egyptian Hieratic, was used in Hebrew. The Phoenician/Aramaic numerals are
here investigated in a comprehensive manner, for the first time. Both systems are
compared and analysed in their development through the Iron Age.
