Since the secular state does not have a state religion or a state ideology and has to respect the individual's freedom of belief, state teaching of religion (according to Article 7 Paragraph 3 of the German Basic Constitutional Law) has to be pluralistic, differentiated and liberal according to the religious denomination of the pupils. It must not be replaced or violated by agnostic, interreligious or interdenominational forms of teaching, but the free cooperation among several religious communities must be permitted.
